CHAPTER SIX

2:00 pm

6th October.

Ivan drove fast. Time is flying away too quickly and he needed to get ahead of it very quickly. Some things needed to be done and he was slightly behind. So far, the wind has been in his sail, and he hoped it would continue in that same way. As he tore through the streets he imagined what would be going through everyone’s minds now. They will be making calls to the police, to the missing co-workers and a frenzy will be building up back at the office. There is no crime without a body and so far, there is nobody to be found anywhere except now.

Valentin will be completely dissolved right now and there will be no DNA to identify him even if his car is discovered. Nikolai and his pet Kira will not be found, no one will look for them and if anyone did look, they will only find that they had both been in a hotel room together. Nothing in that room will show that he had been in it.

This is why there needs to be a body at his destination. There is nothing greater than a game of chase and he is about to create a suspect for the Politsiya.

He didn’t knock when he got to the door, instead, he stood there for a moment, admiring the flowers dotting Genrika’s front lawn. It is beautiful, typical of a woman’s apartment. He pushed the door and walked into the house, holding his briefcase in front of him. Yevgeniy and Genrika were sitting on the couch, chatting away like two people with no problems in the world.

“Oh, my bad, the front door was unlocked and I just walked in afraid that something might have gone wrong,” Ivan explained.

“Penislovich? What are you doing here?” Yevgeniy asked.

“Boris was worried, a number of people are missing from the office and anxiety might be climbing, I don’t blame him for worrying,” Ivan explained further.

“And he sent you?” Yevgeniy asked.

“Come on now, Yevgeniy, don’t talk to him like that,” Genrika said.

“Oh, I get it, the quiet guy always sitting in a corner all by himself. The unlikely person for such a task as this. The thing is he called me to his office and asked me a few questions then Zhina walked in saying you had driven Genrika home and Boris asked me to see that everything is alright. I mean, if you answered your phone now and then, I wouldn’t have had to burn the gas,” Ivan explained.

“I
